HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Dearest Friends,
When Zoe and I began this journey, we knew very little about starting a nonprofit dog rescue. What we did know about, was the bond that we had and will always have with each other. This incredible love that we share became a labor of love for Zoe and I, as we began the process of opening our nonprofit rescue. We struggled through self-help books and government forms. We rallied our friends to volunteer as board members, fosters and more. We have driven hundreds of times to shelters, foster homes, vets and home checks. We have made countless public appearances and even walked the “green carpet” at Zoe’s First Annual Dog Day Afternoon Event. We have been peed on, pooped on, puked on, jumped on and shed on. We have laughed, we have cried and we have cursed sometimes too. More than two years later, Zoe, my tireless volunteers and I have placed 150 small loving homeless doggies into happy “furever” homes.
We have made many friends. We have made many ”furever” families so very happy. We treasure each and every one of their “happy endings” stories and how they share that incredible bond with their new doggy, just like Zoe and I. We have been blessed by the generosity of so many wonderful people! We could never express our thanks adequately enough. In other words, Zoe and I are truly blessed. We are blessed to know each and every one of you. We are blessed to have gotten to know the special little homeless doggies that have touched our lives more than we could ever have imagined.
Without your love and support, there would be no Zoe’s Friends Animal Rescue. You are a part of our family, our past, our present and our future. Zoe and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts, furry and otherwise. Please consider becoming a foster family if you are able or volunteering in so many other needed capacities.
Please consider making a donation if you are able, to help us continue the work that Zoe has started. Zoe dreams, not of sugar plums, but of a Rescue Facility where she can save so many more of her homeless friends. After all, Zoe knows that dreams DO come true!
Zoe and I wish you and your families the Happiest of Holidays!
We love you!

Can you please help?
I had a kidney stone the size of a golf ball! Ouch!!!

My name is Frankie (previously Frenchi) and I am a precious little shih tzu mix that Zoe rescued from the Camarillo Shelter. I am so thankful that they not only saved my life, but they got me the surgery I desperately needed to make me better! Dr.Gregory McDonald, of Westlake Village Animal Hospital operated on me and gave me a new leash on life! However, these surgeries are very expensive for a small rescue like Zoe's Friends! Zoe asked if I would let people know that we can really use donations to cover the $1300 out of pocket expenses for my surgery. Zoe's asks for a $200 donation when they adopt a doggy, regardless of the actual costs each doggy incurs.

Would you like to FINALLY get to decide how your tax dollars are spent?
Ive always said that I wouldnt mind shelling out money every paycheck (AND at the end of the year!) to Uncle Sam, if only I had a say in how the government spends my money. Then we'd truly have a government run by the people, for the people!
Well, if you make a tax-deductible donation before the end of 2012 to Zoe's Friends Animal Rescue, in effect, you ARE choosing how your tax dollars get spent.
When you donate to a charitable organization, youre allowed to take that donation as a deduction off your income taxes. Its not exactly a dollar-for-dollar exchange, but if you know youre going to owe some income taxes, its a great way to offset that. Personally, Id much rather give money to Zoe's Friends Animal Rescue than to the government!
In order for this to affect your 2012 tax return, you HAVE to donate before the end of the year. This helps us as well with our year-end fundraising, which is the time of year we rely on for most of our donations.
So think about it: your hard-earned money could buy food, supplies, medical costs and toys for homeless dogs and cats.or $360 government pizzas. Its up to you!

Nonprofit Helps Small Dogs Find Homes
Courtesy of the Ventura County Star
March 18, 2011
When Cindy Lotspike saw a little white three-legged dog running around a dog park, she said it was a life-changing moment.
It turned out that the little Chihuahua/terrier mix was living in a foster home waiting to be adopted and Lotspike jumped at the chance to take her home.
It was a move that started her down the road of trying to give other little dogs like Zoe the chance of a better life.
"After that I started helping out at rescues and adopted two more dogs, but I really wanted to do more," she said.
So Lotspike determined to set up her own dog rescue group, named in honor of Zoe, recruiting friends as volunteers and foster parents for small dogs who would otherwise be euthanized at the Ventura County Animal Shelter in Camarillo.
The Thousand Oaks-based group started rescuing dogs from the shelter in January, she said. She registered "Zoe's Friends Animal Rescue" as a nonprofit and currently has six dogs in foster homes waiting to be adopted.
"I need fosters desperately. They are really the lifeblood of any rescue organization because we can't take a dog if we don't have somewhere for it to go," she said. "We operate on a shoestring and it is a lot of responsibility, but it's so fulfilling."
"I would love to be an organization that could really save a lot of dogs," she said. "I just want to get the word out to let people know we're here."
Each Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Lotspike and her volunteers take the rescued dogs to the Petco at 140 W. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks, hoping to find them new "forever" homes.
On March 5, the available dogs all small breeds about a year or so old ran around a pen at Petco and greeted possible new owners as foster "moms" Kate Collins and Sue Shotsky kept an eye on them.
"I just love the dogs and I just wanted to contribute some time," said Shotsky, a retired teacher who's on the rescue group's board and is fostering Abby, a Yorkie mix.
Kate Collins, 26, who teaches ninth- and 10th-grade English at Santa Paula High School, is fostering Suzi, a Maltese/poodle.
"Just by taking the dogs out of the shelter you're giving them a second chance," said Collins, who lives in Newbury Park. "We take the ones that are eligible for euthanization the next day."
Sergio Salvador, the dog and cat department manager at the Petco store, said the company is happy to accommodate the adoptions each week.
"They're great and we love having them here," he said.

Our Alumnae

My husband came to Petco on 8/13 with Jack and adopted Julie. What a blessing she has been in our lives. As you can see, she is now the reigning Princess in our home. Jack allows her to share his room (yes, he has his own room) and is very watchful over her.

Hi Cindy,
I just wanted to let you know how happy we are to have added Toby to our family! He is fitting in perfectly... And what a smart little doggie! He learned to use the doggie door in just 2 days and so far he's done all his "business" outside! He is getting along great with our dog Gidget and LOVES to play chase with her all over the yard. When they get tired he likes to sleep nestled up against her so I would definitely say we found the perfect match! My kids took both dogs for a walk today and Toby did great on the leash. In fact, they said he was better than Gidget so who knows, maybe she will learn something from him! Well, I just wanted to let you know how great he's fitting in and to thank you once again!
